The Department of Pathology & Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) in St Louis is inviting applications for a full-time clinical genomics faculty position at the Assistant/Associate Professor level within the division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine.

 

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated individual who will participate in a dynamic and integrated clinical genomics laboratory service, including clinical cytogenetics and molecular genetics assay development, review and interpretation.  Our full service cytogenetics facility offers prenatal testing, constitutional blood and tissue studies, bone marrow and solid tumor cytogenetics, and FISH.  Molecular testing includes next-generation sequencing (NGS) in the setting of tumor somatic profiling, and constitutional disease panels, as well as chromosomal microarray (CMA) studies. This individual will join a medical director and two additional clinical genomics faculty with combined cytogenetics and molecular genetics expertise to work closely with an experienced supervisory and administrative laboratory staff.   The successful candidate will also find diverse clinical and translational research opportunities and in collaboration with faculty members within the LGM Division and across the WU medical community.  An academic appointment in a rank commensurate with experience will apply for this clinical (non-tenure) track position.

 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review and interpretation of cytogenetic and molecular studies
  • Consultation with referring physicians/clinical staff
  • Guidance for assay development/validation
  • Participation in laboratory QC/QA activities
  • Involvement in laboratory protocol review/revision
  • Participation in regulatory activities as related to CAP/CLIA
  • Education of fellows, residents, medical students and staff

 

 

Critical Skills/Expertise

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Expertise in human genetics, molecular genetics and cytogenetic principles
  • Strong analytic skills
  • Knowledge of CAP/CLIA regulations
  • Strong interpersonal skills

Education and Experience:

 

Board certification or active candidate status for Clinical Cytogenetics and Clinical Molecular Genetics through the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG).  The candidate must have excellent administrative skills, an interest in participating in strong teaching programs as well as an interest in participating in clinical or translational research.

 

Job Location/Working Conditions:

Work is primarily performed in an office environment with regular clinical laboratory exposure.  Recurrent meetings and conferences are held in venues typical for an academic medical center.

 

 

The Lab: Our laboratory is full service state-of-the art facility with experienced technologists and managerial staff. The lab performs a wide array of clinical genomics testing as part of the Clinical and Translational Genomics unit (CaTG), with ample and modern laboratory spaces dedicated for chromosome analyses, FISH, microarray and next-generation sequencing-based assays. CMA and NGS testing utilizes both commercial and lab-developed software and analysis pipelines, and is supported by a dedicated departmental Information Systems team.  Equipment includes recently upgraded imaging stations, an automated metaphase scanner, Illumina and Thermo-Fisher DNA sequencing platforms, and a laboratory information system directly supported by the Pathology & Immunology Department.

 

The School: U.S. News & World Report ranks WUSM among the top five in the nation and first in academic selectivity. Eighteen Nobel laureates have trained, taught, or carried out research here. Thirteen faculty members are fellows of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences; 24 belong to its Institute of Medicine, and six are Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigators. The CaTG also includes the Genomics and Pathology Services clinical NGS laboratory, which has been a pioneer in clinical NGS assays, particularly for cancer. As such, this robust clinical genomics service has close affiliations with Siteman Cancer Center, St. Louis Children's' Hospital, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, and translational entities within the Institute for Informatics and the McDonnell Genome Institute.
